Realized two rather disconcerting things the other day:
1. If I get into King's and decide to go there, the program starts in mid-August, but most internships go until the end of August. So I have a logistics problem; and,
2. There aren't that many magazines with summer internships that pay well, and all of the deadlines for newspaper internships have passed. So even if I can figure out the logistics problem, I still have an ever-shrinking pool to choose from.

Have you ever... [Nov. 30th, 2006|02:39 am]
...tried to figure out more about your family history online and with little information to go on? Let's just say it's a futile effort if you have an unusual surname, and that much more difficult when you're not really sure which ancestor was the first to walk off the boat. Unless you want to shell out cash it's impossible. BAH! I give up. Which makes it back to square one for my assignment. Bollocks.

In the midst of all the end-of-term insanity I asked for a brief one-day extension and my prof said the nicest thing to me; he said he always enjoys what I have to say and I can take a day or two, or whatever I need.

RULES: Each player of this game starts off with 10 weird things/habits/little known facts about yourself. People who get tagged need to write a blog of their own 10 weird habits/things/little known facts as well as state this rule clearly. At the end you need to choose 6 people to be tagged and list their names. No tag-backs.

1. I have to shower every morning before anything else, otherwise I get a headache.
2. I am petrified I will fail at being a writer, so I haven’t applied for any summer internships yet. (Forget the fact I’ve already done an internship and my boss seems pleased by my work, and that I have over three years of experience under my belt.)
3. I have issues with food textures and I hate sweet vegetables (like cooked carrots or sweet potatoes).
4. I want to go to Ireland and live in a little cottage in a little costal town for a year and write a book. A quaint fireplace, many pots of tea, a warm wool blanket and a view of the ocean will of course be required. Maybe I’ll write about faeries.
5. I also want to live in Greece and Italy, at least for a while.
6. I only killed one of the four plants I bought in September; the others are thriving.
7. I love really bad old school ‘80s movies, tv series, and music.
8. I would eat fish at every meal if I could, but I’m really not a big fan of shell fish (lobster, shrimp, crab).
9. I hate when people aren’t respectful of others in class (or anywhere for that matter). When someone is presenting you shouldn’t be chatting on msn, fishing through your bag for some inane object, or flipping through a hardcopy of your paper while inputting edits on your laptop. Seriously, you must be pretty self-centred to be that rude.
10. I think this, my fifth year at university, is the most enjoyable one I’ve had. Some amazing things are happening and I love my classes.

Random Play [Nov. 13th, 2006|10:51 pm]

I got this from a friend...makes for great procrastination!

1. Open a music player.
2. Go to 'all music'/'library'.
3. Hit shuffle/repeat/randomize.
4. Find photos of the first 10 artists/bands that come up (no repeats).
5. Have people guess who the artists/bands are.
6. Paste this in your journal and do it too, so I can have fun guessing as well.

So here are my pics...

The last one's a no-brainer...as are some of the others. But have fun with #3, 8 and 9!

The sport of King's [Nov. 4th, 2006|08:42 pm]
[Current Location |ma chambre]
[Current Mood |excitedexcited]

So I've decided I could very easily fall madly in love with Halifax. It's all a simple equation:

Ocean + old lighthouses + victorian homes + proximity to PEI (and thus Green Gables, of Anne of Green Gables fame) + great universities + seeing a new part of the country = heaven.

I don't know why I didn't come to this conclusion earlier.

Oh, and to sweeten the deal, King's has two student clubs I'm psyched about: The Haliburton Society, a literary society where people get together and discuss relevant texts, founded in 1884; and the Theatrical Society, which puts on two major productions each year, founded in 1931. (And The Haliburton Society is the oldest literary society on a North American campus!) It sounds stupid, but this is what I thought of when my dorky high-school self dreamed of university.

Things are wonderful, even if I'm a little blue [Oct. 30th, 2006|10:02 pm]

[Current Music |the sounds of the street outside my window]

I'm a little down in the dumps for three reasons:

First of all, my dream program has changed to a masters program which is ok, except I really don't want to spend 2 years doing research. Yay. So I'm not sure where I'll be next year. Halifax? Toronto? Vancouver? Ottawa? pleeeease dear god not London (Ontario--England would be awesome...but way way too expensive for the program I want).

On another dreary note, I miss my friends that are scattered across the country. Facebook is not enough people!

To top it off, I am boyless. Normally this doesn't bother me because I'm pretty independent but every now and then I wish I had me a boy to cuddle with.

Now it seems that all I do on LJ is write about the shittiness of life, so here's a list of the good stuff:

1. I've discovered the series Slings and Arrows, which is basically Arrested Development meets Wild About Harry (a British film) meets the Stratford Theatre. Which sounds impossibly odd, but it works.

2. I've been doing really well in my classes (minus that one midterm--yikes).

3. I remembered to apply for a bursary.

4. I've rediscovered my love for warmed-up apple juice/cider in cold weather.

5. Hymns and Christmas music make me think of my mom. She used to sing to me every night when I was little, until I made her stop. Now I don't really know how I ever could have wanted her to stop. Still, hearing soft alto harmonies makes my heart smile.

6. People bundled up in hats and mitts and scarves. There's just something magical about the fall and winter. As much as I don't like the cold, I don't know how I'd live without the leaves changing colours or big flakes of snow falling, muffling any sound.

7. When the sun filters through the yellow leaves on the tree outside my seminar classroom window, it casts the whole room in a wash of golden light. Another deliciously magical moment.

Weaving my way through a Victory Lap [Oct. 6th, 2006|01:26 am]
The Victory Lap is the best and worst undergrad experience. Bad because most of your friends are gone--and the ones that aren't are as ecstatic to see you as you are to see them when you bump into each other, because you have about four other friends on campus, so seeing one is a big deal.

Worst because there's nothing like a little rambunctious 17-year-old first-year to make your 23-year-old jaded ass feel ancient.

But there is that sneaky little best side too. Best because I've never enjoyed university more, academically speaking. It's nice to have time to relax, to do my work on time. It's even nicer to see the inside of the library before the last few weeks of the term. In fact, there have been more moments where I've felt like an eager university student in the last month than in the last three years. And I love my classes--something that has never happened in my four previous years.

And while I miss my friends and I feel more like a grad student than an undergrad, I think this may just be the year that makes coming to Queen's worthwhile. And it's about bloody time!

Absence makes the heart grow fonder. [Oct. 3rd, 2006|02:32 pm]

Dear LJ,

I didn't realize how much I was missing you until I logged on for the first time in maybe a month (to be honest I'm not sure when I last logged on; I'm sorry for ignoring you). I'll have to be a little more faithful.

On another note, I've disguised a visit to see Rob in Montreal as an academic venture by planning to visit the Canadian Centre for Architecture to do some research on the Algonquin Hotel in NY. I can't wait to see Robbie again--it's been like 6 weeks! And I am pretty psyched about the CCA. And my paper.

Love,

Super Keener

The Secret Garden... [Aug. 26th, 2006|06:00 pm]
[Current Location |my room]
[Current Mood |cheerfulcheerful]

I bought four plants today and materials for a shelf for my own little indoor garden!!! I'm so excited! (On a side note, this very nice man just randomly helped me find the right kind of screws; random acts of kindness remind me there is a lot more good in the world than we sometimes think there is.)

The plants, which are mostly just folliage, include a Peace Lily (they're very beautiful and very hard to kill), a Maidenhair Fern, Variegated Ivy, and a palm (I think, and hope, it's a parlor palm). All the plants are the kinds that have lots of hungry microbes, so they luv luv luv filtering the air.

I got a mini urn for one of the plants to go in (right now it's the ivy) that is weathered and is a cream colour. I also got a square tin planter, but unfortunately, because the plants that could fit in it are paler greens, it's not going to work. So I'll have to take it back and get something more suitable. And I'll have to get more pots for the other two plants.

All that's left to do after that is to find out if my roomie has a drill so I can hang my shelf...otherwise my project may be delayed... But for now, I'm one step closer to my living air filter. And my room sure looks more beautiful with all the plants.
